 Women Sneakerheads on the come up

Women have been overlooked and underestimated by the sneaker industry for years. That all changed during the 2018 fashion week in Paris when Nike announced that they would be launching a female-focused concept called Unlaced. 

But before Unlaced Women was still hustling and getting money in the sneaker game, you just didn’t know it. This is a salute to some of the female sneakerheads that pioneered and paved the way for others today.

Melody Ehsani

This designer hails from LA, was the first woman to design a Reebok pump and has an ongoing collaboration with Reebok.

Eshani’s designs have been worn by  by celebs like Lauryn Hill, Alicia Keys, Eryka Badu, Rihanna, Keri Hilson – and many more. 

 

 She supports women in her community by hosting a monthly Speaker Series from her Fairfax Avenue store and a portion of each Ehsani shoe purchase goes towards the advancement and education of women in society.

Aleali May

 Model and stylist who’s worked with Kendrick Lamar, Tinashe and Lil Yachty. She was the second woman to collaborate with Nike Jordan for the “Aleali May x Air Jordan 1,” and the Air Jordan 6 “Pink Rust”.

Bediones started her career writing  for Complex and Finish Line. As her brand grew, she started consulting and working as a creative producer. She also designed an Air Max 30 installation for Nike’s SNEAKEASY pop-up stop in Toronto.

Fitness blogger and consultant, she works exclusively with adidas and Finish Line on their content development. California spokesperson for adidas BOOST the Nation charity campaign and Blogger for Modern FIt and Founder of #WCWoman

Emily Oberg

Oberg started at Complex by hosting the video series Get Sweaty, then went on to be the creative lead for Kith Women. She now works as a brand consultant while expanding on her own personal brand called Sporty & Rich.

Caroll Lynn van den Brom

  She designed a collection with Puma, which included an updated Duplex OG. She also runs her own company, Careux, and shares her designs with more than 50,000 followers on her popular Instagram account of the same name. 

Ava Nirui

This writer, photographer and consultant is the  digital editor for Helmut Lang. She was part of the Vans x Marc Jacobs launch and the 30th anniversary Nike Air Max campaign.

  Other accomplishments include making hoodies for MoMA, DIY’d doll-size designer Barbie looks, and put out a zine with IDEA.

Alex Hackett

 The founder of London-based menswear label ALCH. She has worked with Young Thug, Little Dragon and Kendrick Lamar.

In 2017 Hacket designed her own Air Max, and continues to have an ongoing partnership with Nike, working with YOUTH by NikeLab in Shanghai.

Jazerai Allen-Lord

Jazzy started at Kicks on Fire befor she she launched Run DMC’s adidas boutique. She founded God Bless the Fresh, and currently working with Reebok on a project that launches September this year.

And she still has time few to work with Milwaukee boutiques, SNEEX and Clicks Kicks.

Brittany Edwards & Khiana Lowe

Founders of IncorpHERated a program that exposes high school girls to male dominated fields. Also the creators of “Straight to Feet,” which featured women in the sneaker industry.

This workshop series featured female designers, writers, marketers,  and influencers.
